Spain's first MMORPG returns after 26 years — and launches in English for the first time

Prison Legacy revives Spain's first MMORPG, bringing together the original development team to rebuild the cult online role-playing game for a new generation of players. Launching this October with its first official English localisation, it introduces the prison MMORPG to international audiences for the very first time.

Rebuilt from the ground up with a custom graphics engine based on Vulkan, native Windows and Linux support, Steam Deck compatibility and a complete visual overhaul, Prison Legacy preserves the player-driven systems, tactical turn-based combat and distinctive personality that made the original game a cult classic among Spanish MMORPG players.

Years before World of Warcraft introduced millions of players to MMORPGs, pioneering Spanish studio Dinamic Multimedia released La Prisión, Spain's first online role-playing game.

Instead of dragons, elves and medieval kingdoms, La Prisión (Spanish for "The Prison") transported players to a maximum-security prison where the goal wasn't to escape — it was to survive, earn a reputation and carve out a place in a world shaped almost entirely by other players.

Twenty-six years later, the original development team is bringing that world back for a new generation of players.

A prison MMORPG where players create the stories

The prison is the setting. The players are the story.

Prison Legacy isn't built around a linear quest line or a guided campaign. Instead, it's a living online world shaped as much by its players as by its systems. While fantasy settings continue to dominate the genre, Prison Legacy offers something genuinely different: a persistent online prison where reputation matters as much as character progression, alliances can be more valuable than weapons and many of the game's most memorable stories are created by the players themselves.

Players choose one of twelve criminal classes, each with its own abilities, rivalries and progression path. Build alliances. Trade contraband. Learn a profession. Join a gang. Betray it. Become feared — or respected.

Character progression depends not only on combat, but also on reputation, cooperation and the relationships players forge inside the prison.

Those relationships are built in a chat panel that never leaves the screen. Prison Legacy keeps the always-on chat that defined the original — conversations, arguments and deals run continuously alongside play instead of hiding behind a keypress — and gives players far more to say it with. Text colours expand from the original 26 to 4096, with styling options including gradients, outlines and glow, alongside new emoticon sets and a much wider range of animated emoticons.

Combat remains tactical and turn-based, while PvP is entirely optional. Players decide when to leave the protection of the prison guards and enter dangerous areas where every encounter carries real consequences, allowing competitive and cooperative playstyles to coexist naturally.

The game also preserves the dark humour that became one of its defining characteristics. Serial killers, corrupt politicians, cannibals and mobsters all share the same prison, creating a world where tense rivalries, eccentric characters and deliberately absurd situations are all part of everyday life.

Rebuilt for modern platforms

While remaining faithful to the original experience, Prison Legacy has been completely rebuilt behind the scenes. Confirmed features include:

  • Custom graphics engine based on Vulkan
  • 64-bit client and server architecture
  • Native Windows and Linux support
  • Steam Deck compatibility from launch
  • Performance and stability improvements
  • Extensive visual overhaul, including revamped lighting, geometry, textures, characters, NPCs and numerous environments
  • New character animations currently in development
  • Redesigned onboarding experience for new players
  • Expanded always-on chat: 4096 text colours (up from 26), new text styling and additional animated emoticon sets
  • Steam achievements

A community that never really disappeared

What made La Prisión memorable wasn't just its mechanics. It was the people.

Players built gangs, rival factions, businesses and friendships. They organised tournaments, community events and even in-game weddings officiated by Game Masters, attended by dozens of inmates carrying virtual gifts.

Today, veteran players are gathering once again in the official Prison Legacy Discord, where the developers share progress, answer questions and gather feedback directly from the community. As part of the game's international launch, the Discord community is now fully available in both Spanish and English, welcoming a new generation of players from around the world from day one.

"We're not making a nostalgia trip. We're building the game we always wanted it to become — one that can surprise players who've never heard of it, not just satisfy the ones who remember it."

Toni Pomar ("Sobakus"), 3D Programmer — Prison Legacy
